Grebes 2013
Grebes can be spotted in the Schwalm-Nette nature park relatively often from
a short distance. We had the pleasure to watch in summer of 2013, a family with two newly hatched young.
Two eggs were in the nest and mother Crested grebe was still busy on brooding. One of the
dune chicks lay next to the eggs, the other was transported by Dad on his back. However for some quick,
movements it went swimming and then somehow climbed, loud crying again returns to the Father.
To our delight, we were able to follow and document the ritual of feather-feeding live.
Little grebes need these feathers, they are used for lining of the stomach to protect against sharp
Bones.
