The planned shore excursion in Cooper Bay (South Georgia) unfortunately had to be canceled due to bad weather, but the king penguins didn't mind the bad weather much.
Grytviken on South Georgia is known as the final resting place of the legendary polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. In the historic whaling station, the house of the former station manager has been converted into a museum, and the church and the former "production facilities" can also be visited. There were lots of fur seals, king penguins and gentoo penguins on site.
On the crossing from the Falkland Islands to South Georgia, we passed the Shag Rocks, a formation of six rocks in the middle of nowhere. Hundreds of cormorants (blue-eyed shags) breed here.
Thousands of chinstrap penguins breed on the volcanic Deception Island, here a pair in the background next to a Sea bear.
We had encounters with particularly friendly penguins on Gourdin Island, part of a group of islands in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula. Here there is a large breeding colony of Adelie penguins and a smaller colony of chinstrap and gentoo penguins.
We had a dream day in Cierva Cove, a bay in Grahamland on the Antarctic Peninsula. Landings are not permitted there, but we explored the magnificent polar landscape with the Zodiacs.
Penguins were our constant companions during our trip to South Georgia and here in Gold
Harbour there are tens of thousands of breeding pairs, especially king and gentoo penguins. Unfortunately, we were
unable to land here due to the many elephant seals present and could only observe the animals and the impressive landscape
from the Zodiac.

The albatrosses accompanied us on many of our crossings. On the Falkland Islands, we had
the opportunity to visit a breeding colony of black-browed albatrosses at West Point. In between, the rockhopper penguins
also raised their young.

Our trip to the Antarctic Peninsula at the beginning of 2024 was so eventful that we will be posting more photos under "Photo of the month" this year. Here a gentoo penguin with our ship SEA SPIRIT in the background.
Once in a lifetime - we are back from our trip to another world. Ice - snow - rain - sun - sea - waves - whales - sea lions - penguins - seabirds.... The impressions were very intense, we will post a travel report here soon.
